Affect/Effect: Affect is primarily used as a transitive verb and means to influence: 'Smoking may affect your health'. As a noun, it has a specialised medical meaning that relates to emotional states (as in affection).

On the other hand, the word effect is chiefly used as a noun: 'The damaging effects of smoking'. As a verb, it means to accomplish: 'They effected a change'.
